Hon. Kimani Ichung'wah

The Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, EGH, MP is the Member of Parliament for Kikuyu Constituency that was hived off from the larger Kabete constituency in 2013. He is a Ranking Member of Parliament serving his 3rd consecutive term and was elected the Leader of Majority in the 13 th Parliament.

Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah began his political career in 2013 when he was first elected to The 11 th Parliament on a TNA ticket. In the 2017 general elections, Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah made history as the first MP to be elected unopposed under the new Constitution. These fete was indeed a true demonstration of the level of support and approval ratings of his performance by his constituents. He was re-elected for a third term in the Aug 9 th 2022 general elections.

During his 1st term as Member of Parliament, he served as Vice - Chairman of the Public Investments Committee, Member of the committee of Powers and Privileges and member of the Departmental Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Co-operatives. He was also nominated by Parliament to represent Kenya in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). In the 12 th Parliament He served as the Chairperson, Budget and Appropriations Committee until 2019. As chairman of Budget He was lauded for his very strong and able leadership of the Committee. He was also a member of the Committee on appointments and a Member welfare Services. He was selected by Parliament as a delegate on behalf of The Government of Kenya to attend the World Bank IMF spring meetings to discuss issues of global concern.

In his Legislative role, Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah sponsored the Alcoholic Drinks Control (Amendment) Bill, 2014. He is also the sponsor of the National Disaster Management Authority Bill (2019) which seeks to establish the National Disaster Management Authority and promote coordinated response to disasters across the country. As a professional accountant, he has also made significant contributions to bills emanating from departmental committees relating to his field such as the Insurance (Amendment) Bill (2013) where he sought amendments to the bill to allow free market selection of auditors by insurance firms and creation of term limits for the CEO of the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA). He proposed in the 12th parliament consideration of amendments to the House Standing Orders to allow bills that had passed the first and second readings in the house to be reintroduced without pre-publication scrutiny once they lapsed. The proposal led to the amendment of standing orders and promoting continuity of bills from one Parliament to the other.

He has been listed by Mzalendo watch as the best performing member in parliament in terms of contributions to bills and house activity and ranked in the top 5 of the MPs approval ratings conducted by research Firm Infotrak based on his legislative prowess and eloquence in parliamentary debates and the proper handling of public finances such as NG-CDF for development projects consistently.

Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah is very passionate about education which has set the agenda for his track record in the massive infrastructural and financial investment of the Kikuyu NG-CDF (https://kikuyuconstituency.com/) which he patrons. He is also a patron of KICE foundation, a registered Independent foundation founded in 2013 which gives scholarship to bright and needy children from Kikuyu Constituency (https://kicefoundation.org/). He is an Experienced Economist with a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Economics & History) degree from the University of Nairobi. He is also a CPA-K from Strathmore University. He is a proud alumni of The Alliance High School.

Before Politics, he had an accomplished career in the private sector having held senior management positions several companies in Diverseylever East Africa, Madison Insurance Company, The Standard Group. He also prides himself in being a fine butcher which is not a mean fete considering that one of the largest publicly owned abattoir, the Dagoretti Slaughterhouse in his constituency, is a source of employment for over 5000 people. Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah is a family man, a father of four amazing girls and a Church going Christian.
