The Hospital was founded by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa .It as two major units; the Orthopedic and Eye unit.
The Orthopedic Unit
This modern and well-equipped unit is located in the outskirts of Nairobi and specializes in rehabilitative orthopedic surgery for persons with Physical impairments and general orthopedics. Provides orthopedic, reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation for its clients. It has an outreach/mobile clinic program that helps to educate, identify, refer and follow up children with disabilities.
Thousands of patients from all parts of the country and beyond have been attended to and their bones/joint problems sorted out. These patients come from all the parts of Kenya and from neighboring countries.
The Eye Unit
It was established in 1975 as part of a collaborative effort between the hospital and Christoffel Bliden Mission (CBM), a German non-governmental organization (NGO). It has a new eye ward and theatre block funded by CBM. Other facilities include two examination rooms, optical workshop, eye drop production unit, offices and a student hostel. The Kikuyu Eye Unit is the eye center for Nairobi and a Referral center for East African Region.
Over the years, the hospital has grown to its present status, with its patient roll getting longer than ever. It has reached a point where it handles between 70-80,000 patients a year.
